Do I/You really need a "TOP OF THE LINE" Radar Detector?

Author: admin  |  Category: escort 9500ci radar detectors

I would love to have an Escort 9500i…I currently have a Cobra XRS 9530. For the Driving I do which is RARELY over 80 MPH on 70MPH LIMIT roads and NEVER over 60 on up to 55mph roads (45 zones included) All in all never more that 20-25 MPH over… My COBRA has given plenty of warning in these cases…I am considering getting a Detector that supports POP..Once I find out if Alabama State Troopers Use POP Detection. Do the guys who say "COBRA SUCKS GET AN ESCORT" tend to be the big speeders? I am just curious.
EDIT: FOR THE "PROFICIENT COPS"

None of you must work in the area I am in…

I'm not sure what limit they hold it to here…but I was on a road where the limit is Posted 45 and I was doing 50-55. The Radar Detector went off well ahead of time. The cop was fully dark (no lights of any kind illuminating the vehicle) I know everyone says keep it less that 5 over and you will be ok. But I know of at least 3 incidents in where some one got a ticket for 56 in a 55 or 71 in a 70.

No radar detector beats a proficient radar operator – sorry to bear this bad news.

Vehicle speeds can be estimated by the operator and the radar antenna is left off until the operator observes a vehicle exceeding the speed limit. This provides no signal to the detector and I am much quicker to the lock button than you are to the brake peddle – I have issued citations to hundreds of people with radar detectors so no matter what the manufacturers say – you can not beat the proficient operator

If you don't speed, then you don't need a radar detector do you? The money I save by not speedin and wasting money on tickets, fines and court costs helps me put our price gouged gas in my vehicle. And by not speeding, I make my overpriced gas last longer.

I am not condoning speeding, but consider it part of your overal safety, awareness and defensive driving system. Get a GOOD radar detector. Consider spending the cost of two speeding tickets on a radar detector.

When combined with good driving habits, you will virtually eliminate certain risks.

Here is how it will protect you:

    1. In case you get slightly carried away and would otherwise get caught speeding during some moments of pre-existing/emotional stress. Sometimes you will be in situations where you may end up 10 mph or more over the limit just because your mind isnt fully there. Hearing the alarms go off will snap you back to reality, HOPEFULLY in time to make a difference.

    2. In rare cases where a seriously less than profficient officer is in the area, you MIGHT just get the chance to eliminate yourself from the equation by slowing down to 5mph below the limit. Radar isnt perfect and sometimes the easiest way to make sure that you arent the victim of an Officer's mistake, is to go slow enough to make the traffic leave you, smoothly doing this the MINUTE you hear the alarm.

All this isnt fool-proof, but it does add an additional layer of awareness and protection.

    EDIT:
While it is true that your chances of avoiding a ticket in a ONE TO ONE confrontation with a highly skilled radar operator ARE VIRTUALLY NIL, this ideal situation does not occur as often as cops would like to say here. There are many other scenarios where the radar WILL help.

    1. Since i have used my radar to detect police activity up to 6000ft (more than one mile away), i can tell you FACTUALLY that you can avoid a ticket SO LONG AS you arent the first one caught speeding. Having good equipment gives you an advantage.

    2. In most REAL-world scenarios even if you are 1500ft away, you might be moving in or behind a pack of 1 to 2 cars who are also slightly over the speed limit. Slowing down smoothly and early (and allowing the other cars to appear to be relatively moving much faster than you) is one way of avoiding a ticket. Early warning is the key.

These strategies WORK. The thing to appreciate is that they are less likely to work if you are doing EXTREMELY high speeds because visually you will stand out like a ROSE against a stack of lilies.

High-end radar detector is part of an awareness system. It is most valuable if you spend LARGE amounts of time on the road(Working for example), and frequently have to drive in areas where there are is a high level of radar activity. Statistically speaking, your chances of getting a ticket in these circumstances is higher than for the normal individual.

Someone said it earlier, but you're not going to beat someone that really knows how to run radar. Usually, I get people for speeding before they have a chance to slow down after the radar detector comes on. If radar detectors were as effective as they claim to be, people wouldn't still be getting speeding tickets . The best method of avoiding a speeding ticket is just not to speed. It doesn't sound like you're really reckless, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. Besides radar detectors are illegal in some states…just save your money, you're better off!

I am proficient at running my radar and will get you before you have a chance to slow down. I get so many people who paid top dollar for their radar and STILL got a ticket from me. Don't waste your money. Save it for your next speeding ticket.

As I have said before on Y/A I admit to being a chronic speeder. Not a weave in and weave out dangerous type speeder, but if the lanes open I'm hauling. In my experience those detectors are nothing more then a pain in the a**. They go off all the time when there may not even be a cop around and not to mention the fact that they are "cheating" in my opinion. I trust my instincts a gazillion times more than those things by paying close attention to what's around, behind and in front of me. As someone else mentioned passing someone at a much higher rate of speed than them will get you a ticket for sure. Also, slow down where visibility is low like around curves and up/down hills, watch the taillights in front of you, etc.

I have not had a ticket in 10 years and if I eve do get pulled over I'll be the first to say "Man, where did you come from? You must be pretty good" and happily sign my ticket.

If you're not willing to accept responsibility for breaking the law then you shouldn't do it, nor should you count on some stupid device to keep you from getting a ticket.

Oh, and copgirl, everytime I come to this section I always get a laugh out of your responses.

"Save it for your next ticket"…priceless.
