escort 8500 radar detector
I’ve noticed some people put there radar detectors as high as their rear view mirrows, and some directly flat on the dash, and some in the middle. What is the difference between these 3 positions, and which one is best?
Also I have a Escort passport 6500 i think it is, and i soon want to upgrade to the 8500 x if that makes any difference, i just want to make sure i get the most out of my detectors, thanks!
Ohhhh okay, well thanks guys! But why do some people put it as low as actually laying it on there dashboard and not even using the suction cups? Does this help better with laser maybe? Or is the laser the same for top or bottom?
Higher is definitely better for a radar detector. Placing your radar detector higher in the vehicle provides a better opportunity to pick up those speed traps hidden around the next corner or over the top of the next hill, as well as the signals from POP or instant-on radar guns that are being use more often.
Most radar detectors claim they will detect police laser, but by the time they ‘detect’ laser, it’s already too late to slow down. A laser is a very narrow beam of light, and it only has to hit your vehicle for 0.2 seconds to record your speed.
If you are concerned about police laser (LIDAR), your only alternative is a laser jammer. A laser jammer detects and jams the laser gun, allowing you time to adjust your speed if necessary. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also LEGAL to use in nearly every state. There are a number of laser/radar combo systems, like the Escort Passport 9500ci, which includes the new Escort ZR4 laser jammer.
In a perfect world, no one would ever make mistakes and we would never go over the speed limit. However, it’s good to have a radar detector and/or laser jammer as a reminder to watch your speed as you’re going down the highway. Good luck!

Yesterday I purchased a GPS and I feel like I need to take some security measures for my car to prevent my electronics from being stolen. Along with the GPS I have an iPod connected to a Harman/Kardon Drive+Play unit, an Escort radar detector, and an older Alpine radio. As it stands, my car is begging for its window to be broken out and have everything stolen.
I have a car alarm, but as everyone knows, they are almost useless.
I could remove every item (radio faceplate, gps, ipod, radar detector) and carry it with me every time I got out of the vehicle, but this is far too much trouble.
Is anyone aware of a security accessory for their auto electronics? I appreciate any help or suggestions.
stick it in your glove box and lock the door? also they have aftermarket alarms/remote starts that tell you via the remote when the alarm is going off which is a little more useful than flashing lights.
i have the same problem but when all else fails hang around awhile and carry a big stick.

I temporarily installed my 9500ci’s antenna to the right of my RVM, and have my STi installed just above the left side of my RVM. This test shows how much more sensitive the 9500ci is on K band compared to the STi.

I was cold busted here. I had dropped my radio remote control and had just recovered it when I got tagged with instant-on. I have no idea how I drove away from this without a ticket. I don’t think this was CHP, because they almost always use laser for situations like this. The gun he used looked to me like a Kustom Talon II, which the CHP doesn’t even use. I think this was Irwindale PD running a speed trap on the 605 that runs through their city.
